First Carbon-Negative Country in the World

BHUTAN: First Carbon-Negative Country in the World

Bhutan is also globally recognized as a carbon-negative country, a remarkable achievement that highlights its deep commitment to environmental conservation. Guided by the principles of GNH, Bhutan’s Carbon-neutral journey is built on a foundation of sustainable development, responsible forestry, and clean energy initiatives. Bhutan’s forests, covering 72% of its land and safeguarded by a constitutional mandate to maintain at least 60% forest cover, act as a powerful carbon sink, absorbing more carbon than the nation releases.

Through GNH, Bhutan has gained global recognition for promoting a more inclusive and sustainable development model, offering a path that values happiness, social equity, and environmental harmony as core components of progress.
