Currency, Banking, and Exchange Controls in Bhutan
Currency:
- Bhutan’s official currency is the Ngultrum (Nu.), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR) at a 1:1 ratio. The Indian Rupee is also accepted as legal tender in Bhutan. The Ngultrum is not available for exchange outside of Bhutan, meaning you will need to exchange foreign currency into Ngultrum once you arrive.
ATMs:
- ATMs are available in most major towns and cities in Bhutan.
- International debit or credit cards (Visa or MasterCard) can be used at ATMs to withdraw up to Nu. 40,000 (approximately USD 475) per day.
Credit Cards:
- Credit cards, particularly Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, are accepted in most large hotels, restaurants, and handicraft shops in major urban areas.
